Step By Step

Andrew Alexander King, a mountaineer and adventurer, is attempting to climb the world’s tallest mountains. If he succeeds, he’ll be the first African American to climb the 14 summits (the seven summits plus the world’s seven tallest volcanoes). But, “conquering mountains” isn’t his actual goal. He knows that bringing diversity to the outdoors is the real challenge. “Who are you? What are you? All individuals are born as lottery tickets into this world. No one’s ever asked what race, color, or gender or where you want to be born. Here’s your lottery ticket and your place out to the world.” In Step by Step, King shares his story of growing up as an African-American in Detroit, how it affected his outlook on life and helped forge his relationship with nature.
